Ethnicity, Organization, and Work Values: A Comparative Study of Thai and Chinese Industry

     This dissertation first explores the current validity of some of the commonly accepted ethnic cultural differences relating to work values among one segment of the modern urban labor force [of Thailand]: lower level clerical workers. Second, it compares large Thai and Thai-Chinese industrial firms in order to determine the possible influence of ethnicity on organizational structure, particularly in personnel systems. Third, it seeks to locate differences in the ways Thai and Thai-Chinese firms accommodate themselves to the structural problems posed by continuing growth in enterprise scale and complexity. Beyond these rather concrete research goals, a more general goal relates to the logic of inquiry into culture and social organization, and seeks to anchor some of our notions of Thai society and culture through a set of controlled comparisons with Chinese social organization.
